Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project is designed to assess the implications for enhanced safety in road vehicles through an experimental programme of work on driver responsiveness to within-vehicle auditory displays. Auditory signals offer a channel that should compete minimally with visual attention to the primary driving task. We will design a set of auditory displays that can provide a spatially-informative interface to a collision avoidance system for the driver's use - advisory speech messages, auditory 'icons' signifying real world events (e.g., the sound of an impending collision), and conventional warnings. The work will be carried out in two phases: (1) a laboratory programme involving identification and testing of a prototype set of sounds, based on perceptual characteristics (e.g., urgency) and factors affecting user acceptability, whilst also providing hazard localization information; (2) using the Leeds Advanced Driving Simulator to carry out application testing of a derived set of auditory displays (in comparison with visual displays or no display) for use in collision advisory, alerting and warning systems. It is expected that the auditory warnings will have applicability for other within-vehicle applications, such as route navigation systems, and for other transport systems.
