Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to improve the performance of speech recognition systems operating under varying levels of packet loss such as would be encountered over mobile or IP networks. The project is not aimed at restoring the time-domain speech samples, as with Voice over IP, but rather operates on the speech feature vectors themselves - as is proposed in the ETSI Aurora standard. Retransmission of lost packets is not possible with real-time systems so this project proposes to develop and compare three alternative schemes for packet loss compensation. These are i) the estimation of feature vectors missing as a result of packet loss using signal processing and estimation techniques, ii) building inherent robustness to packet loss into the speech recogniser itself and iii) combining signal processing techniques with network protocols (such as Differentiated Services) to create a hybrid solution to minimise the effect/probability of packet loss.In addition a realistic model of the characteristics of packet loss in mobile and IP networks will be developed in the early stages of the project. This will be evaluated against real packet loss data and once satisfactory will be used in speech recognition experiments to simulate packet loss. This gives control and repeatability to the experiments.
