Summary on Grant Application Form |
D2B is the leading powder neutron diffractometer at the ILL, an international neutron facility in which the UK is a major participant. Over the last 20 years, 13213 ias been used extensively by the UK community for studies of important solid materials (ceramics, superconductors, magnets, catalysts, minerals, etc.) An ipgrade is urgently needed to take advantage of improvements in detector, monochromator and collimator design and ensure that 13213 remains a state-of-the-art nstrument. Super-D2B will enable higher resolution data to be collected more quickly than before, enabling subtle structural features to be resolved, small samples to be investigated, and multi-pattern studies to be performed. Support from EPSRC is sought for this project by a consortium of six UK users on behalf )f the community. The proposers will cant' out commissioning experiments to demonstrate the power of the upgraded instrument and provide insight into the )roperties of materials such as CMR oxides, ice under high pressures, silicate minerals and fulleride superconductors.
