Summary on Grant Application Form |
D2B is the leading powder neutron diffractometer at the ILL, an international neutron facility in which the UK is a major participant. Over the last 20 years, D2B has been used extensively by the UK community for studies of important solid materials (ceramics, superconductors, magnets, catalysts, minerals, etc). An upgrade is urgently needed to take advantage of improvements in detector, monochromator and collimator design and ensure that D2B remains a state-of-the-art instrument. Super-D2B will enable higher resolution data to be collected more quickly than before, enabling subtle structural features to be resolved, small samples to be investigated, and multi-pattern studies to be performed. Support from EPSRC is sought for this project by a consortium of six UK users on behalf of the community. The proposers will carry out commissioning experiments to demonstrate the power of the upgraded instrument and provide insight into the properties of materials such as CMR oxides, ice under high pressures, silicate minerals and fulleride superconductors.
