Summary on Grant Application Form |
This application is for continuing support of the programme of scientific exploitiation of the MEIS facility at Daresbury by Phil Woodruff at Warwick; this is one of the core programmes supporting the application for funding of the facility. The scientific programme is concerned with exploiting the novel capabilities of MEIS which complement the other quantitative structural methods used by this group (especially scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction and normal-incidence X-ray standing waves) in the area of the structure of the surfaces and shallowly-buried interfaces of metals and oxides. Specific topics to be addressed are: i. adsorbate-induced reconstructions and surface modifications of metal surfaces (such as the rumpling of metallic surfaces believed to accompany atop adsorption of alkali metals and the stronger distortions produced by C, N and O on some surfaces); ii. the structure of step-edges of vicinal surfaces; iii.the structure of surface alloy phases and the depth-dependent composition and structure of the nearsurface atomic layers of bulk metallic alloys (this topic includes clarification of the role of the surface in determining the effective atomic radius of elements in surface alooy phases); iv. studies of metal-on-metal epitaxial growth in selected systems complementary to electronic structural studies at Warwick; v. studies of oxide surfaces including oxide/metal substrate epitaxial growth and metal/oxide and oxide/oxide interfaces prepared in situ
