Summary on Grant Application Form |
Improvements to the performance of waterborne films, coatings and adhesives can be made by using reactive surfactants, called surfmers, in the latex preparation. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the reaction in preventing unwanted surfactant segregation and migration requires chemical analysis as a function of depth into the film surface. Access to the Surrey Ion Beam Centre is requested to conduct Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy on latex films in order to probe the surfactant distribution near their surface. The behaviour of surfmers will be compared to conventional surfactants. The RBS technique has already been demonstrated to be effective in profiling surfactant concentration in latex films. The research will determine if the uniformity of drying in the vertical direction, which can be gauged by the Peclet number, is related to the surfactant transport. Ultimately, manufacturers of waterborne coatings and adhesives will gain better control over their material's morphology and properties.
