Summary on Grant Application Form
Doctors and surgeons are presented with many problems in their daily working routine and with the correct application of modern technology to these problems their working environment and the treatment of patients can be greatly improved. Within the Medical Engineering Research Institute we hold internal workshops to address these problems by brainstorming the problems and applying mechatronic principles to them. This has led to numerous successes in surgical instrumentation and novel surgical assist systems. With the increasingly international nature of the healthcare industry and the impact of this on healthcare research and of the interest of groups in Brazil in MERIT, it is proposed that an international series of workshops known as Technology Meets Surgery international (TMSi) be instigated. These workshops will be held in alternate years in Brazil and Dundee. The format for these workshops will be exactly the same as those held currently under the banner of MERIT, except that they will be held over several days instead of a single session. This will allow for greater interaction between the participants, with the intended outcome that at least one international collaborative research project will be firmly identified during the workshop and hopefully others will also be identified
