Summary on Grant Application Form
Electrical trees are a major precursor of insulation breakdown. A quantitative understanding of their inception, expressed via a computer simulation, will facilitate their inhibition. It is known that the inception of electrical trees from point electrodes proceeds in three stages. First charge injection builds up the local space charge field until impact excitation can be initiated. Impact excitation then increases the local free volume by bond breaking until impact ionisation can be effective in creating a discharge-sustaining cavity. The first stage of this process has already been modelled effectively. Expressions will be derived to describe the physics of succeeding processes, to formulate the program architecture for their computer simulation, and produce a preliminary computer program.
