The proposed project aims: a) to deepen our understanding of how to construct information systems to support the automatic gathering of background intelligence in response to a new event, as exemplified in the activities of journalists covering breaking news stories; and b) to advance the integration of advanced human language processing technologies, specifically, information extraction, question answering and multidocument summarisation/fusion technologies.To achieve these aims we intend to work with the Press Association, the UK national press agency, using their electronic archive and observing working journalists in order to build a demonstration system -- an electronic cub reporter . This automatic system will analyse an initial short textual description of a breaking story, generate from it a set of queries pertinent to deriving the context or background for the story, retrieve relevant documents from a text archive, analyse them, and fuse their content into a single representation of relevant background materials. An interface component will interact with the journalist to allow extension or restriction of the set of initial queries, to determine how the output is to be presented, and to support follow-up searching. Rigorous evaluation of the underlying technologies and of their utility to journalists will be carried out.
