Summary on Grant Application Form |
Current treatment for osteoarthritis is pain relief followed ultimately by total joint replacement. This project will investigate peptide self assembly in the design and engineering of functional nano-structured materials as injectable boundary lubricants and to fill surface defects in osteoarthritic cartilage. Elastomeric networks from peptides that form beta sheets that self assemble in situ will be developed. The relationship between the molecular and mesoscopic structure of the network will be established. The physical properties of the networks and their dependence on network structure will be characterised. Their performance in model diseased knees, biocompatibility and biodegradation in vitro will then be determined.
