Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to synthesise a range of materials with high birefringence, in the range of 0.4 to 0.5 with either poistive or negative dielectric anisotropy for use in devices with active silicon backplanes. The devices will operate in either the Fredericks or the VAN modes, and will be used for beam steering applications. We will develop new synthetic route to novel materials (Post-doctoral Research Assistant), and we will evaluate the liquid crystal properties, the birifringences, the polarizabilities, the voltage thresholds, and the dielectric anisotropies of materials (project student), We will also develop mixtures and formulations for practical applications.
