The proposal aims at developing two crutually important area of high aperture optical systems used in high density optical data storage. First, we wish to develop a theory and method to design pupil plane (phase and/or birefringent) masks to manipulate the state of polarisation in the vicinity of the focus of a high aperture objective lens. This programme point has a direct application on optical data storage where our method has a potential to increase the data density by a factor of at least 100 by coding individual data pits by polarisation. The optical recording medium will be made polarisation sensitive and then bit information will be written by rotating the incident polarisation. The method will also be capable of compensatingfor polarisation aberration introduced by high aperture lenses. The second major aim of our proposal is to develop a theory for optical systems illuminated by ultrashort light pulses. This programme point has its major application in optical data recording but it also has application in nonlinear optical methods, such as two- and three-photon fluorescence microscopy and second and third harmonic generation optical microscopy. We show via experimental examples, which were obtained to help the development of the proposed theory, that when a surface second harmonic generation microscopy, considered to be a fully coherent phenomenon, is compared to surface reflection microscopy the results are fundamentally different. In this proposal we seek answer to this difference.
