Summary on Grant Application Form |
Two polymorphic organic crystal systems, glutamic acid and urea, will be studied,. By measuring attenuation and speed of sound over frequencies from 1-150MHz in crystallising solutions across a range of conditions, methods to distinguish size, concentration and crystal form for these systems will be investigated. We will study various adaptive optimisation techniques, including neural networks and genetic algorithms, to invert ultrasound measurements in order to retrieve useful data on particle characteristics for process control without requiring comprehensive particle and dispersant property data. A database of extinction spectra will be established by measurements of non-spherical samples of known characteristics along with measurements and modelling of spherical samples.A generic optimisation scheme for particle shape and size determination will be developed, with the objective of requiring only a few additional calibration measurements to enable the scheme to be transferred between different material systems.
