Summary on Grant Application Form
We request funding to support the vist of Dr. Vincent Hardy to the Physics Department here at the University of Warwick. Dr Hardy would vist for 12 months. He would be based in the laboratories of the superconductivity and Magnetism Group and will work with research staff associated with this group.Dr. Vincent Hardy is a full-time reseach scienctist working for the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. He is an experimentalist with considerable expertise in many areas of oxide physics. Our proposed research programme will be centred around measurements made in a Quantum Design PPMS, heat capacity apparatus. These measurements will be complemented by magnetic, transport and neutron data. The samples studied will all be single crystals. We have two starnds of reseach@1. Investigation of magneto electronic states in rare easrch maganites using heat capacity measurements including: - Investigation of unusual spin-waves and possible orbital contributions to heat capacity (low-T range). - Studies of entropy variations associated with charge and orbital ordering (high-T range). - Exploring of magneto-thermal history depandent behaviour in maganities.2. Investiagtion of the physical properties of the 1D magnetic compound Ca3C02O6 using heat capacity measurements. We plan to extend this work to related cobalt oxide materials.
