Summary on Grant Application Form
We have been awarded beam time (26/3/02-22/4/02) for two separate magnetic Compton scattering studies of the magnetisation density in ferromagnets that puzzlingly exhibit coexisting ferromagnetism and superconductivity. In the first study on ErNi2B2C, we shall establish the nature and size of the spin moments associated with the Er and Ni sites, and any conduction electron contribution both above and below the superconducting transition temperature. In the second study, which is joint with Dugdale (Bristol) on the material, ZrZn2, the origin of the magentism and in particular the extent of the delocalised contribution, which eludes neutron diffraction techniques, will be determined foir the first time. The results will be compared with LMTO calauations by our co-author ( Dugdale). The grant request is for travel and subsistence to allow 4 people to run each experiment around the clock for -2 weeks. The experiments are unconventional and involve the use of a new and novel switchable insertion device and an 8 T magnet: the beamline is new to us.
