Cold atom physics was the subject of the 1997 and 2001 Nobel prizes. It is one of the fastest moving and most rapidly expanding fields in physics. The recent EPSRC report Forward Look at Opportunities in Atomic and Molecular Physics points out the following. Some of the smaller groups working on neutral atom trapping need to be strengthened. This might be achieved through awards supporting cooperation between them, by the formation of strategic networks and possibly via the sharing/pooling of certain items of equipment. This will enable a properly-resources critical research mass to be reached to further promote UK competitiveness with the large international efforts in this field It goes onto say that The EPSF should look favourably on initiatives by the smaller groups working in the Cold Atomic Species area to consolidate their efforts to achieve critical mass. This proposal is a response to that call. We are asking for funding to support a UK cold atoms network - UKCAN. This will allow us for the next 3 years to have a national workshop where technical and scientific aspects of cold atom physics will be discussed at the highest level, making sure that any new ideas techniques from outside the UK are quickly and effectively absorbed by our community. We are also seeking funds for several much smaller meetings during, the rest of the year.
