Gasification and pyrolysis have been identified as central to future power production in the UK, Europe and the rest of the World. In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and for reasons of security of supply and internal regeneration of agricultural economics, the use of biomass derived fuels will be encouraged, fostered by the Kyoto protocol. As it is highly expensive and dangerous to conduct experiments on live industrial plants, laboratory scale cold models are often used. It is important that cold models are of the size comparable to prototype units, as results from small models have shown that they are inadequate in simulating complex gas/solid flows. The LSPM facility acrylic reactor is 508mm in diameter and 7.3m height and capable of operating to 5.5 bar. The solid feed and compressed air rates are 2m3/h and 4000m3/h respectively It is unique, not only because of its size but also because of its flexibility. It can be configured to carry out work on different types of reactors (e.g. moving packed bed, fluidised bed, entrained flow and catalytic reactors). It will provide quality data for the development and validation of computer codes.The LSPM facility is to be rebuilt in one of the laboratories at Cranfield. It will be made available to the research community within and outside the university.
