A new method for studying initial-boundary value problems for integrable PDEs in two dimensions has been recently introduced by the PI. Examples of integrable PDEs are linear PDEs with constant coefficients and the usual nonlinear integrable PDEs. We propose to identify large classes of linear PDEs with variable coefficients which are integrable and to solve physically meaningful boundary value problems for such PDEs.It has been recently shown by C. Rogers that a class of hydrodynamic motions which were investigated in the doctoral thesis of L. Howard can be reduced to the Heisenberg spin equation, which is a nonlinear integrable equation. We propose to initiate a program of study to investigate if the underlying geometric-soliton approach can be used in other hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic systems.
