Summary on Grant Application Form |
The past 10 years has seen a renaissance in main group chemistry which in group 13 has been spearheaded by the rapid development of the chemistry of subvalent and l or low oxidation state group 13 halide and alkyl complexes. In a preliminary study we have utilised our expertise in the hydrido chemistry of indium to prepare a series of novel low oxidation state, In-In bonded compounds that have been stabilised by Lewis bases, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and diazabutadiene ligands. We propose to extend this chemistry to the preparation of a variety of low oxidation state group 13 hydride and halide complexes, mainly stabilised by NHC ligands. Such complexes are unknown, other from our preliminary study, and an examination of their structural and bonding characteristics will be carried out. In addition, their use in inorganic and organic synthesis will be systematically explored. This project is likely to produce results of international significance to main group chemistry.
