Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposes to use molecular hosts as building blocks to create new crystalline materials with 2D and 3D network structures. The molecular host cyclotriveratrylene will be modified to include chelating ligand functionalities at the outer rim. The intrinsic host-guest or molecular recognition behaviour of these new host molecules will be investigated, however the main focus is to combine them with metal centres to create coordination polymers. Engineering coordination polymers from molecular hosts is relatively novel and raises a number of interesting possibilities that are not necessarily accessible using more traditional ligand. These include (i) multiple types of inclusion behaviour within one material, namely lattice inclusion of the type usually associated with crystal engineered systems as well as specific host-guest interactions at the host sites; (ii) unusual geometric constraints of the ligand leading to novel network topologies; and (iii) use of host-guest interactions as supramolecular synthons to build up network structures. The resulting crystalline materials will be characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The host-guest or inclusion characteristics of such materials may lead to downfield applications in areas such as separations, catalysis and other zeolitic applications, and hence their inclusion and sorption behaviour will be studied.
