SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.Advances in semiconductor technology are allowing the fabrication of integrated structures incorporating elements that show single-electron effect and in which the tunnel-coupling can be increased to allow measurable charge fluctuations. We propose a series of theoretical studies that investil the collective properties of inhomogeneous semiconductor systems of this kind, across the range from weak to strong coupling. We will use the re of these studies to account for the properties of low-density two-dimensional electron systems, where inhomogeneides can lead to the spontaneous formation of (disordered) regions showing charging effects. Similar theoretical issues arise in the quantum Hall regime; we will investigate the effe charging on the coupling of dots and anti-dots in this regime. Our theoretical investigations will be guided by recent experimental observations on semiconductor nanostructures in zero-field and in the quantum Hall regime.
