SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.It has been a common knowledge that the film shape in an elastohydrodynamic point contact is a flat plateau bounded with a horse-shoe shaped constriction. However, recent experimental studies have shown that a substantial dimple can be developed in the centre of the contact. Various theoretical analyses have been carried out to explain this phenomenon, including the thermal-viscosity wedge mechanism and the lubricant solidification and wall-slip. The purpose of this proposal is to combine these two mechanisms in a complete EHL analysis in order to provide a further physical insight into the dimple phenomenon in EHL contacts. The predicted film thickness will be compared with the corresponding experimental measurements reported in the literature in order to validate the theoretical models. The outcome from the research proposed in this study will provide important information for further development of EHL theory and better understanding of rheological properties of lubricant. This will be important not only for future development in tribology, but also will provide a direct benefit to companies specialising in highly stressed machine elements such as gears and bearings as well as lubricant industries.
