Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental study is proposed of the response of long-span structures (eg bridges) to earthquake input which varies between the ground support points. Recent developments at the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre in Bristol have produced a step change in the accuracy of control of dynamic experiments to make such multiple-support input (MSI) tests possible for the first time. Experimental results will be compared with available theoretical models and with design recommendations where they exist (eg Eurocode8), particularly investigating the situations in which synchronous input would give unsatisfactory design guidance. In order to prove the MSI software/hardware 1-and 2-bay portal frames will initially be used to represent bridges because theoretical models are available for verification. An already available 3-pier highway bridge model of 1:50 scale will then be tested and compared with available theories. The input information will be derived from Eurocode8 spectra, and attention will be given to inelastic behaviour of the base of the piers, as well as the use of isolation devices where they support the deck. Similarly, an existing model of a 2-pier cable-stayed bridge will be studied.
