Summary on Grant Application Form
Funds are sought to develop an Engineering Doctorate Programme within the new Centre for Formulation Engineering at Birmingham, which has been established with JIF support. Modern process engineering is increasingly concerned with the production of materials whose microstructure is a complex function of process history. The industry need is for research into the physical, chemical and biological processes that create formulated product structure, and the maintenance or breakdown of thal structure in use. The Centre integrates the interdisciplinary expertise of the component Schools (Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biosciences)in the formulation of multiphase structured materials: Foods, Bioproducts and Speciality Products. Innovation will be driven by scientific and technological developments in the Centre's major skills areas: structured fluids, soft solids, particulate processes and biological delivery.
