Summary on Grant Application Form
The grant will fund Professor Promislow, an expert in nonlinear optics, to visit Bath, Bristol and Southampton. There will be studies of three projects. Firstly will investigate blow-up and pattern formation in the optical parametric oscillator. The investigation will use a combination of geometrically based adaptive methods, and techniques for calculating homoclinic orbits. Secondly we will investigate front formation in the parametric nonlinear Schrodinger equation. T studies will again use adaptive methods to study pinch off in the fronts by investigating a novel fourth order equation. Finally we will apply symplectic numerical methods to quantify the impact of residual dispersion on pulse interactions in a fibre. Professor Promislow will have the opportunity to interact extensively with engineers and physicists at Bath and Bristol and will also give presentations on industrial mathematics to both groups. He will visit Southampton during his stay.
