Summary on Grant Application Form |
Traditional adaptive filtering systems are, in fact, only minimally adaptive in that many aspects of the filtering operation are fixed a-priori by making use of 'best guesses' relating to the application in hand. Typical of this is the choice of finite mpulse response structures with a length fixed at some predetermined value using a least squares objective function (i.e. assuming Gaussianity). The parameters when adapted are simply the coefficients of this structure. This research project seeks to strip away some or all of these prior presumptions in the general adaptive filtering problem. This will be done by designing new adaptive algorithms to effect structural adaptation, in its simplest form as length adaptation but then leading on to more complex structural adaptation such as the choice of nonlinear processing kernels. The restriction of always using Gaussian assumptions is also rejected in favour of using distribution dependent adaptation which allows better optimisation in the presence of sub- or super-Gaussian interference. The techniques developed in this research will be verified within the context of well known bench-mark applications in the communications area such as data equalisers and speech echo cancellers.
