This is the theoretical part of a pair of linked applications involving a joint theoretical (University of St Andrews) and experimental programme (University of Strathclyde) whose objective is investigation of a possible new radiation source the GHz-THz frequency range. A coherent cyclotron resonance radiation experiment will be designed and constructed Ill closely emulates the conditions under which the theoretical predictions show that electromagnetic radiation should be emitted. It is proposed to measure and analyse the characteristics of this emitted radiation, including frequency, power, polarisation and temporal evolution at the same time as measuring the electron beam characteristics. Finally we propos comparison of the experimental results with the theoretical predictions and a conclusion as to the effectiveness of this mechanism as (a) a new laboratory radiation source and (b) the relevance of these experiments to space observations.
