Summary on Grant Application Form
We will embark upon a predominantly experimental study of the exciting and intriguing fundamental optical properties of planar chiral metallic microstructures. We will study various forms of planar chiral structures including regular 2D structures of different 'wallpaper' point groups, chiral forms of Penrose tiling and planar chiral fractals. We will use electron beam writing to manufacture the planar metallic structures on silicon and silica. With these structures we will investigate the far-field characteristics of diffracted, scattered and transmitted light in visible and near IR, including effects of nonreciprocity, and will study the optical band-gap effects in transmission/reflection. We will map the near-field and intermediate field distributions using scanning nearfield optical microscopy. We will investigate the role of plasmon and surface plasmon polariton effects in the optical response of such structures. We will advance the theory of planar chiral structures through collaborative research with a number of parties.
