The Xenoserver project aims to build a public infrastructure for wide-area distributed computing. We envisage a world in which Xenoserver platforms will be scattered across the globe and available for any member of the public to submit code for execution. This kind of open and pervasive system is essential to enable computation to be located close to the entities with which it needs to interact, and hence avoid the fundamental problem of communication latency.The Xenoserver platform will integrate user authentication, resource management and auditing. Crucially, the sponsor of code will be billed for all the resources used or reserved during the course of execution. This will serve to encourage load balancing, limit congestion, and make the system selffinancing. Support services running on top of the platform will assist users in locating Xenoservers that best meet their communication and resource requirements. Thus, Xenoservers provide the natural home for code within the network -- either directly as a platform for service deployment, as a substrate for other active-networking systems, or as a transient base for code running on behalf of mobile devices. Within the project we will build and deploy a test-bed set of Xenoservers around the globe and make these available to authenticated members of the public for experimental use.
