This proposal is to fund a visit by Professor Pitarke from the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao, Spain), to spend 5 months collaborating with Inglesfield. Pitarke has recently been calculating the lifetime of surface states on noble metal surfaces in a one-dimensional model, but there is a need to use a more realistic model of the surface. During his visit, Pitarke and Inglesfield propose to combine the embedding scheme with calculations of the screened interaction at complex frequency in order to treat the surface of a semi-infinite solid. To begin with, a model of several atomic layers embedded onto a jellium substrate will be studied, to test the feasibility of the approach. If successful, this work will have applications to many experimental studies of lifetimes and surface dynamics.
