Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary purpose of this project is to develop a coherent model for the development of multi-agent systems, in which agents act in accordance with the roles they take on and their relationships with others, and engage in complex dialogues in the pursuit of their activities. In developing this model of dialogue, commitment and social context, a particular application domain will be used to focus the research. The specific application domain is the exchange of technical information, such as reports and project details, within a large organisation. Within such a domain, a model of the types of dialogue that are evident between agents during the exchange of information - specifically persuasion and information-seeking dialogue - is critical. The social context in which agents operate is also of key importance; i.e. the roles involved in an organisation, how these roles are characterised and how they influence the interactions that agents engage in. The third element of a coherent model of multi-agent systems is the modelling and management of commitment: establishing commitment through dialogue, managing conflicts between commitments within a social context, and understanding the circumstances under which commitments cease (e.g. satisfaction, expiration and release).
