Summary on Grant Application Form |
We seek to build a source of entangled photons based on parametric down conversion. Most studies to date have examined entanglement in polarisation (spin angular momentum), frequency or linear momentum. We intend to explore the possibilities offered by entanglement in orbital angular momentum (OAM). Working with OAM gives us access to a large Hilbert space spanned by a discrete set of states associated with integer OAM quantum numbers. One of our unique contributions is the ability to perform a measurement on a single photon to determine its OAM quantum number. This measurement ability will allow us to demonstrate quantum phenomena associated with OAM, including an EPR paradox for angle and OAM and additionally demonstrate encoding of multiple bits of information on a single photon. The project relies on a combination of experimental and theoretical skills to demonstrate and exploit intrinsically quantum optical phenomena.
