Summary on Grant Application Form |
Raman amplifiers are key components for next generation high data rate optical transmission. Though gain is routinely obtained in single-mode fibre using Raman effect, there is a misunderstanding of its noise properties. The assumptions sustaining the noise figure (NF), originally developed for erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) are not satisfactory for Raman amplifiers. In this project, we will first develop a simulation software of the Raman amplifier, including forward and backward pumping schemes, with emphasis on high power and high signal power. Then, we will review the existing literature on Raman noise to clarify the assumptions and check their validity in the case of Raman gain. Finally, we will compare these numerical data with experimental measurement of noise. The demand for gigabit intemet on short transmission distance multimode fibre based network is increasing, but Raman amplifiers are not appropriate in those fibres. Therefore, investigation of different modulation schemes is important. In particular, polarisation shift keying (PoISK) seems of great interest. In this project, we will first build a PoISK modulation system. Then, we will build a demodulation system, compatible with multimode fibre operation. Finally, we will transmit data down a few km of multimode fibres and compare transmission results with other existing modulation schemes. In particular, we will compare PoISK with sub-carrier modulation.
