Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research will study an actively controlled Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT) turbocharger system, that will be tunned to follow the engine generated pulse by means of a fast actuated nozzle. It aims to make better use of the exhaust gas energy of the engine than in current VGT turbochargers. The project is directed towards automotive, Diedel-Injected(DI) engines. VGT turbocharger testing will be performed under unsteady flow conditions, which represents a far more realistic scenario than the commonly used steady state testing. It is unique in attempting to offer an unsteady flow analysis of an advanced actively controlled Variable Geometry system. In addition, this research will improve the understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics by comparing a standard VGT with the proposed active system and with steady state flow characteristics. Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) will be used to further enhance the understanding of the flow physics under unsteady flow conditions and to be able to provide much needed validation data for computational fluid mechanics methods.
