Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of this project is to study magnetic systems and their interactions under high pressures. It will be focus on using x-ray scattering methods (high energy magnetic Compton scattering and diffraction at conventional energies) employing elliptically polarised radiation to facilitate the isolation of spin and orbital contributions to the magnetisation density and band polarisations which underlie the magnetic and lattice properties observed in a number of different systems.Pressure dependent studies are of great interest in their own right, but are also important to an understanding of ambient pressure properties, since the mechanisms responsible can be revealed via studies of their pressure dependence. Particular investigations include (i) the changing importance of 4f and 3d interactions in itinerant electron metamagnetism, (ii) pressure induced enhancement of the exchange interaction in rare earth monochalcogenides, and (iii) magnetic-lattice interactions in shape-memory and martensitic materials. The work requires an experienced researcher (ie. a PDRA) together with funding for the presure cell, and T&S for a number of experiments at APS and SPRING8. The project will also provide PhD training.
