Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will apply nucleation and growth models to the deposition of technologically-important ceramic oxide crystalline phases, with the aim of achieving controlled growth at lower temperatures than hitherto possible, thus widening the range of substrate materials which can be coated. The material chosen as the research vehicle is the alpha phase of alumina, and the modelling will address issues such as the role of impurity dopant species on film growth. The growth of other corundum-group oxides will also be modelled and studied, in order to establish the similarities and differences in their growth dynamics. The project will provide generic information on the applicability of modelling routes to metal oxide deposition, and will result in the identification of commercial-scale processes for low temperature deposition of crystalline metal oxides, particularly of the corundum group. These have functional properties which are relevant to a very wide range of applications sectors, in which particular wear, friction, chemical (e.g. corrosion), optical and electronic performance is required.
