Our proposed LINK research project is a collaborative research programme between Cambridge Display Technology, the National Physical Laboratory and Sheffield University. Our aim is to improve the light extraction efficiency of polymeric light emitting polymer devices (PLEDs). We will approach this problem developing a full theoretical description of the optical properties of PLEDs. This model will serve as a foundation for our experimental research programme. V will attempt to increase the light extraction efficiency from PLEDs using a number of methods: Firstly, we will investigate the fabrication of resonant cavity structures (microcavities) around PLEDs, which will allow us to establish the 'design rules' to extract maximal light output from the device. Secondly, we will investigate periodic nano-scale patterning within the polymer layer and at other positions within the PLED to enhance the external light output efficiency. We v pay careful attention to methods by which such patterning could be incorporated within a commercial manufacturing environment. Thirdly, we will investigate use of low refractive index aerogels to decrease the angular range over which total internal reflection traps light within an PLED. Finally, we will asses the op properties of the modified PLEDs with respect to their human perception properties.
