The objective of the proposed research is to apply expert knowledge based techniques to the automatic optimisation and calibration of passenger car engines operating under transient conditions. The aim is to improve on the high levels of fuel economy and driveability achieved by an expert calibration engineer within a significantly faster and more efficient automated process.Two key applications of knowledge based techniques within the work are the representation of subjective driveability and the control of the optimisation process. The first will combine expert opinion with correlations between subjective and objective data, allowing driveability to be targeted by the optimisation process along with harmful emissions and fuel economy. The second will use expert knowledge to direct the optimisation process, improving its efficiency and leading to better optimisation than currently achieved by either automated or manual techniques in isolation.A large proportion of the funding requested will be used to upgrade a test facility at the University, allowing dynamic testing to be performed during the proposed research as well as future investigations. Cosworth Technology and CP Engineering will contribute to the research and exploit the results. It is considered that the result will be a major enhancement in the quality and efficiency of the engine calibration process.
