Summary on Grant Application Form
(1) To develop further the Force Appropriation for Non-linear Systems (FANS) and Resonant Decay for Non-linear Systems (RDNS) methods so that a non-linear model, based in linear modal space, may be determined for non-linear multi-degree of freedom continuous systems. For the FANS method, this will include development of an improved convergence algorithm and an approach for identification of coupling terms. For both methods, the modal transformation needs to be developed to include mode smoothing, subsets of modes and residual effects, and the choice of excitation level and curve fitting parameters needs to be automated as much as possible.(2) To evaluate and compare the two methods on simulated and real continuous structures.(3) To develop an indicator to show which modes behave linearly and non-linearly, and which are non-linearly coupled.(4) To develop and evaluate approaches for identifying the spatial location of discrete non-linearities. (5) To transfer the technology developed to the aerospace industry.
