The project will determine optimal means of producing evacuated glazing at low temperature to achieve a heat loss coefficient approaching 0.6Wm-: 1 with a predicted glazing life/durability of over 20 years. A range of vacuum glazing systems will be fabricated both within a vacuum system and us a pumpout method, with different edge seal constructions, getters, pillar materials and optimal pillar configuration and spacing determined for tempered and non-tempered glass with soft and hard low emittance coatings. The optimum seal configuration, environmental parameters and conditions to achieve durable effective seals will be assessed and automation investigated. The glazing thermal performance will be experimentally determined a predicted using numerical models. The developed edge seal performance and durability will be characterised under both extreme conditions (outsic temperatures ranging between -40C and +40C with internal temperatures of 20C) and thermal cycling. A cradle-to-grave life cycle environmental impact assessment of the widescale adoption of the developed technology will be undertaken. Potential pathways to extend the laboratory-based process to large-scale cost-effective industrial volume production will be investigated.
