Summary on Grant Application Form |
The central aim of this work is to maximise the potential of a human user's real-time performance in mining data from complex systems. The innovation of a generically applicable software toolkit will allow designers of interactive systems to optimise the mapping of user inputs onto multiple system parameters. Users will be able to monitor these system parameters, whilst they are adjusted in realtime, through the use of novel sonification techniques. This project addresses the major limitations of existing user interfaces, which have not been developed for multi-parameter real-time systems, by providing an environment for the exploration of complex data spaces. Although the toolkit will be generically applicable to any real-time situation using or producing complex data sets, two specific areas are targeted; physiotherapy movement analysis, and helicopter flight data analysis.Physiotherapists at Teesside University School of Health & Social Care have, remarkably, very similar data analysis requirements to engineers at Westland Helicopters. It is a strength of this research that it addresses such contrasting disciplines with a common toolkit, which will enable the sonification of multi-dimensional data under interactive human control in order to improve the effectiveness of the required data analysis.
