|
The main focus of the research is about how the physical form of the urban environment affects sustainability in use. Many claims have been made for the benefits of physical form and technical measures to achieve sustainability. The claims are that certain urban forms are spatially sustainable, enviromentally sound, efficient for transport, socially beneficial and economically viable. However, these claims have not been rigorously tested. There are key locations across any city or town (e.g. centre, intermediate areas, suburbs, perphery) where urban form can be characterised. It is proposed that the sustainability of these 'typical' forms can be assessed by comparing the actual physical characteristics with the theoretical claims for physical form, and by examining how these different forms enable or constrain the ability and desirability, of people and firms to behave in a sustainable way. The main question to be answered by SUFC research is which forms are most likely to give rise to high levels of social interaction, well being, accessibility, economic activity, whist reducing pollution and the consumption of resources?
