Summary on Grant Application Form
Sol-gel methods are often used to produce high quality oxide materials with the advantage of control over the form of material obtained and a reduction in processing temperature. The aim of this proposal is to develop similar methods for the fabrication of group 4 and 5 transition metal nitrides, concentrating in particular on titanium nitrides. The reactions of metal amides with ammonia have been shown to produce the target materials as amorphous powders. The innovation here will be to control the rate of these reactions, through changing organic substituents, solvents, complexing agents or temperature, to allow interlinked networks to grow. When these networks are extensive enough, gels which hold their shape will form and these can be coated onto materials or cast into a mold. Careful heating will lead to ceramic nitride materials with the same shape. In addition, the amorphous nitride powders obtained from these reactions initially have a higher oxidation state than usual and high pressure methods will be used to obtain these materials in crystalline forms for structural characterisation.
