Summary on Grant Application Form |
Rubber modified thermosets are materials which are being increasingly chosen for use in several distinct areas. For all possible applications, knowledge of the fractrue toughness of the material is a crucial input to the choice of the material. The overall aim of this proposal is to develop a validated model to describe the toughness of a wide range of rubber modified thermosets. The model will be developed using finite element analysis; validation will be carried out by comparison of predicted results with results in the literature and further experimental measurements. Additional comparisons with results from other analytical models in the literature will be carried out. Models will be developed to describe a wide range of these materials, including variability in size, dispersion and volume fraction of the particles. Particles of different properties and morphology will be considered. The criterion for particle cavitation will be derived, and its effect will be taken into account.
