Summary on Grant Application Form |
Since this is an application for support for overseas travel, the research itself will not be supported by the EPSRC grant. However, because the travel to the USA will enable the research to occur, a summary of the proposed research project is provided:The intention is to research into modeling of microstructure and its relationship to manufacturing processing and to final material properties. This will be achieved through innovative machine vision techniques for 2D and 3D recovery of surface data, followed by data analysis and modelling using genetic algorithms and neural networks. The work will benefit from the expertise and previous research experience at UWE and AU in the areas of machine vision, and data modelling and analysis for process optimisation. The research is highly relevant to the EPSRC Mission Statement. For example, the project will provide advice, and promote public understanding of engineering, both as a consequence of utilisation of the results by the beneficiaries, and the proposed communication of the project aims and outcomes to academic and commercial groups in the UK and US.
