|
Listeners in a noisy social situation experience a compelling impression that focussing their attention in a particular direction is vital to picking out a desired voice. However, considerable recent evidence suggests that this impression is misleading; cues to spatial location do not provide a means grouping and segregating sounds and success at the listening task does not require the voice to occupy single direction in perceived space. An alternative theory proposes that (1) interaural time delays (ITDs) are processed separately in each frequency channel, through a mechanism that measures interaural correlation, and (2) interaural level differences (ILDs) are processed merely by listening to the ear with the best signal-to-noise ratio. The proposed study will (1) test the plausibility of this theory for explaining listeners' performance, (2) determine the routes by which speech information from ITDs and ILDs can be combined and (3) investigate the mechanisms by which the correlation-sensitivity is achieved.
