Summary on Grant Application Form |
A very successful EPSRC (ERCOS) collaborative research project on the fracture of ferritic steels, between the University of Surrey, the University of Birmingham, the University of Wales at Swansea and Magnox Generation at Berkeley, comes to an end in Sptember 2002. The Surrey contribution has been based on computer simulation studies which have been able to predict fracture strengths of polycrystalline materials subjected to environments leading to degradation of properties. However, these models have been mainly two-dimensional, used a fixed average grain size and no substructure has been incorporated within the grains. The proposed research will involve extending the models (both two- and three-dimensional versions) so that they become multi-scale and can be used to investigate grain size, grain morphology, and substructure such as twin bouindaries and the presence of martensitic and bainitic phases. The extended models will be validated using selected two-and three-dimensional simulations. Decisions will then be made as to whether it is feasible to carry out a more extended programme of research collaboratively with experimental colleages at other institutions.
