The low power plasma polymerisation of isopropylacrylamide will produce a surface with the properties of a thermally responsive hydrogel. By changing the polymerisation conditions it will be possible to controllally alter the temperaturedependent swelling transhion.The parameters under control are the excitation power, isopropylacrylamide flow rate and the presence of copolymer speciesThis proposal describes the development and exploitation of this technology, which offers unique advantages in terms of device construction Plasma polymerisation is a cheap, easily automated, solvent free process resulting in high quality, adherent coatings, it also offers the capacity to create heterostructures on the micrometrgateral) or nanometre (vertical) scale. This latter advantage will be employed in the fabrication of both lateral and vertical functional heterostructures. A substrate patterned with areas of polyisopropylacrylamidefor the spatially selective and revesible adsorption of proteins and cellswill be constructed and tested. By layering polyisopropylacrylamide with another plasma polymerwhich has a different refractive index optical elements will be constructed with layer spacings that are responsive topes, temperature and electric field strength.
