This proposal outlines the case to EPSRC for the establishment of a multidisciplinary IMRC based on the strengths of Heriot-Watt University in three key areas of manufacturing - photonics technologies for manufacturing, digital tools for product design and manufacture, batch processing and manufacturing of speciality chemicals. Heriot-Watt has an established track record in these areas and five-year funding offers new opportunities to achieve the objectives of the Centre in terms of stability, flexibility, responsiveness and, crucially, in enhanced synergy within and between the specialisms of the multidisciplinary teams involved. A known funding pattern will enable long term planning of the research portfolio. In particular it will enable the University to build on its strengths and to enhance the exciting interfaces between science and engineering. Industrially, the opportunity now exists to build on our collaborative links, and to form further strategic relationships with major industries. The IMRC will enable a balanced and evolving portfolio of research types with a balance of short-term and long-term projects, applied and blue-sky research, and to encourage support of short feasibility and scoping studies. The opportunity also allows for greater flexibility in the deployment of resources to the best advantage in meeting targets and responding to opportunities
