Summary on Grant Application Form |
There has been a recent upsurge in interest in vertically partitioned relational databases in which one stores the columns of a table contiguously rather than the rows. The idea here into apply the same idea, roughly speaking, to XML. The advantage to vertical partitioning is that the columns are treated as vectors, and one can operate on the columns with vector processing operations. Initial experiments indicate that the same idea can be carried over to XML. What is proposed here is to implement this scheme and investigate how to use it for improving the efficiency of programming interfaces and query languages. The ability to use vectors in a query language is especially important in scientific databases in which order is frequently important. This proposal involves scientists and scientific databases in the evaluation of the methods.
